Sabrina Jonnier is showing her World Cup dominance again this weekend, qualifying first in Mt Ste Anne after last week’s disappointing result in the French National Champs. However, she was very closely followed by Mio Suemasa less than a second back, which is the Japanese rider’s best result in a WC qualifier or final this year. Celine Gros, Floriane Pugin and Emmeline Ragot round out the top five, with Emmeline riding on a broken ankle (brankle?) from last week’s French champs. Ouch. Tracy Moseley was sixth fastest, and will be hoping for better than that for tomorrow to end her run of bad luck.
The Canadian venue for this round saw an increase in the number of entrants, including several Kiwis, but this made it harder to qualify. Gabby Molloy made it into the top 20 who will race tomorrow, while Harriet Harper just missed out despite having a fancy new yellow Santa Cruz to make vrrm vrrm noises on. US riders Kathy Pruitt and Darian Harvey have made the cut, and with a few other different riders in the final mix it should be an interesting race.
French rider Myriam 'Pompon' Nicole is out of contention after she crashed in practice and broke her scapula, which unfortunately means she’s going to lose her fourth place overall after this round. Freecaster caught the crash during the Fox course walk, it’s at 7:05 in this vid. Warning: it’s not nice!
In the 4x, Anneke Beerten beat Jill Kintner by just 0.02 of a second to take the top spot, with Fionn Griffiths in third. The course has some interesting ‘mountain bike’ bits (rocks and general gnarliness) so the race could get interesting, although there are only twelve women enterred. 4x qual times here.
