Fionn Griffiths wins Bromont 4x World Cup

UK rider Fionn Griffiths took a gnarly win in today’s Bromont 4x World Cup 2009. Coming into the evening’s event after today's World Cup downhill, Fee wasn’t favoured to win. Series leader Anneke Beerten and close competition Jill Kintner were both bringing their best riding without being tired from DH, and Jill was rumored to be the only woman jumping the big line of jumps. In a dramatic final, Jill Kintner got the snap and an early lead ahead of Anneke, and since Jill had the inside line in the first turn she pushed Anneke up to the top of the berm. This could have been a great tactical move, but unfortunately it backfired by not only slowing Anneke and losing Jill time as well, and allowing Fee to power through and gain an untouchable lead. It’s Fee’s second 4x World Cup win for 2009 after she took the win in Andorra.

Anneke Beerten retains the series lead, and Fionn and Jill are tied on points going into the final round in Schladming in September. And it will be all on in Canberra with times this tight too, Martha Hucker will be there LIVE to bring you even more detailed news of how it goes down.

In the heats, Mio Suemasa went out early when she got a puncture, dropping her from second to third and out of contention. Canadian local Anne LaPlante was riding strong before having one of the gnarliest crashes of the day in the rock garden – she lost the heat but was back on the bike after a massive dive onto the rocks in a perfect demonstration of the value of body armour.

In semis, there was plenty more crashing when Sarsha Huntington went down hard but still finished. 2008 4x World Champ Melissa Buhl repeated her pattern from last week of crashing in the semis and winning the small final. After a hard day of racing DH as well, that’s gotta hurt.

The images here are from the Freecaster.tv live feed, there was some great racing to be seen despite the voiceover descending into a drunken cacophony of competing commentators! Rad.
